Clem is Director of the Regenstrief Institute for Health Care, Regenstrief Professor of
Medical Informatics and Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the Indiana University
School of Medicine. A pioneer in medical informatics, he developed one of the first
electronic medical record systems (in 1972), which now carries 300 million clinical
observations and is in use as the principal source of clinical data at four Medical center
Hospitals. He was also the first to prove that computer-based decision support can improve
care in a randomized clinical trial. He has also been a leader in the development of medical
information standards, including the order-results chapter of HL7 and the Logical
Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC) project.
