Hong Kong in Profile

Restaurants
Hong Kong has more than 5,000 restaurants specialising in all the regional dishes of China and neighbouring Asian countries as well as European and American cuisine.

Shopping
Hong Kong is a shopping paradise. Most shops and department stores are open seven days a week until 10:00 pm. Street markets are in business every day until late into the night. The best buys are Chinese handicrafts, silks, jade, jewellery, fashion, custom-made garments, audio and video equipment. Major credit cards are widely accepted.

Time
Hong Kong time is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.

Tipping
Most restaurants add a 10% service charge automatically. Where tipping is voluntary, 10% of the bill is fine. Small tips are common for drivers, bellboys, restroom attendants and doormen.

Visas and Passports
Visitors must hold a valid passport, endorsed where necessary for Hong Kong. Citizens of most members of the APACT are permitted at least a 7-day visit visa-free. Check your status at the Chinese Embassy or Consulate or other visa issuing office in your country of origin.
